The Church of the Holy Cross. A Catholic monastery operated here until 1538. This building is unusual among old churches of Finland because the bell tower is attached to the main part of the church.

bobbin lace Bobbin lace in the old town hall museum.It is not known exactly how the art of making bobbin lace was brought to Rauma. Possibly ways are from abroad, by sailors, by Franciscan monks or nuns from Vadstena, Sweden, or by a Dutch noblewomen. Originally the lace was made by men, possibly by the sailors, or by monks at the monastery in Rauma.
bobbin lace Bobbin lace in the old town hall museum. By the 1850's lace was a major industry in Rauma, and almost every women in Rauma was a skilled lace maker. This industry decreased drastically when women stopped wearing lace bonnets.

old building Narrow street in old Rauma. There are about 600 old wooden buildings, some of which are homes to about 1000 people who live in old Rauma. The buildings are painted in traditional pastel shades.
